Novgorod
One of the oldest towns in Russia. Novgorod traces its hiistory at least back to the time of the Vikings or Varangians, who created a settlement here called Holmfirth in the 8th Century AD.
The town of Novgorod became a major Russian centre and a major state in its own right and was only conquered in the 15th century by the princes of Moscow.
